All wines are Organic from all over the world. We partner with smaller vineyards that make wine the natural ‘clean crafted’ way without pesticides, no chemicals added, no sugar added, and low sulfites.

Each bottle is independently tested and must meet these 10 criteria for us to sell and to be labeled ‘clean crafted’:

  • Grown naturally with no synthetic pesticides
  • Sustainable organic and/or biodynamic farming methods
  • Most harvested from old growth vines
  • Delicious and always distinctive year after year
  • Tended by actual people and not mass produced by industrial agricultural methods
  • Vinified by hand not manufactured in a lab
  • Zero grams of sugar (the average mass produced wine has up to 16 grams of sugar added)
  • Zero added chemicals (FDA allows up to 250 additives to be added to wine like ferrocyanide, ammonium phosphate, copper sulfate, mega purple, GMO ingredients, just to name a few)
  • Slow crafted to extract naturally occurring antioxidants
  • Low Sulfites usually less than 50ppm (FDA allows from 250-350 ppm of sulfites)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORGANIC, VEGAN, AND CLEAN CRAFTED WINE?

Organic wine can be found in various stores. Organic just means that the grapes are not sprayed with synthetic pesticides. It does not mean that the wines are pure/clean. They can still be bottled with additives that change the smell/color/taste/texture of the wine, extra sugar or syrupy sweeteners, and contain high levels of additional sulfites. Vegan wine means that the wine is either completely unfined, or the winemaker may use bentonite clay for the fining process in lieu of other, more common fining agents such as egg whites, fish parts, etc. Fining is a process done after the wine is made but before it is bottled to try and get rid of particles and sediment that naturally cause new wines to be cloudy.  A fining agent is added to the wine and acts as a magnet for the particles & sediment…these things coagulate around the fining agent making larger particles that may then be removed from the wine.  Many of our clean-crafted wines are also vegan, and will be labeled as such in the descriptions!


DOES SCOUT & CELLAR ONLY SELL CLEAN CRAFTED WINE?

YES! All our wines are tested by an independent lab to make sure they do not have any chemical pesticides, synthetic additives, no added sugar (just natural sugar from grape that is converted to alcohol), and low sulfites.


WHAT IS “MASS-PRODUCED WINE”?

When we refer to mass-produced wine we are talking mainly about wine brands that are made by “The Big 3”, three huge wine companies that control 70% of the United States wine market.  These companies buy very large quantities of grapes from various growers, usually at a deep discount, and then manufacture their wines in labs and add things to them such as FDA-approved chemicals, extra sugars, etc, in order to make sure they taste, look, and smell the same from one vintage to the next. These are most wines you find in the grocery store or local wine store.


WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL HEALTH BENEFITS FROM ORGANIC CLEAN CRAFTED WINES?

The wines we sell are from old growth vines which produce maximum nutrients and are curated slowly to maximize antioxidants released in the wines.

No sugar is added during the process which naturally makes our wines lower in calorie, lower in residual sugars, keto and low carb friendly.

Low sulfites levels and no chemicals used throughout the process allows for no wine headaches and less reactions


HOW MUCH SUGAR IS ADDED TO MASS PRODUCED WINES?

The average mass produced wine has up to 16 grams of sugar added to their wines. Sugar is added to boost alcohol content, change the color, taste, and texture in wine, and to alter the taste. Our wines have zero added sugar and most wines have less than 3 residual sugars.


ARE OUR WINES KETO FRIENDLY/LOW CARB?

Yes our wines are keto friendly and low carb. Many of our wines are vinified to full dryness which means there are zero sugars in them. We also do not allow for added sugar or other sweeteners post- fermentation. A typical 5-ounce glass of Scout & Cellar clean crafted wine containing less than 2 grams of carbohydrates. Mass produced wines add 13-30g of residual sugars to their wines.


ARE OUR WINES GLUTEN-FREE?

“Wine as nature intended” means customers enjoy a gluten-free experience with every glass.

Mass-produced wines use synthetic additives that sometimes contain gluten. Because gluten does not bind as well to organic matter (the good stuff!) when compared to other fining agents, our winemakers do not use it.


HOW MANY CALORIES ARE IN ORGANIC CLEAN CRAFTED WINE VS MASS PRODUCED WINE?

A typical 5-ounce glass of Scout & Cellar’s Organic clean crafted wine contains 100 calories vs a conventional mass produced 5-ounce glass of wine, containing up to 300 calories because of the added sugar!

HOW MANY CHEMICALS CAN BE ADDED TO WINE?

The FDA allows up to 250 additives and chemicals to be added to wine like ferrocyanide, ammonium phosphate, copper sulfate, mega purple, GMO ingredients, just to name a few)


HOW MANY SULFITES ARE ADDED TO TRADITIONAL WINES?

The FDA allows 250-350ppm (parts per million). If a person is susceptible to headaches because of sulfites, choose red wines, as they have less sulfites. Our strict criteria states the wines we sell must have less than 100ppm, while most of our wines have less than 50ppm of sulfites.


IF SOMEONE GETS THE FLUSHED AND ALLERGY/SINUS FEELING FROM WINE, WHAT IS THE PROBABLE CAUSE?


Histamines found mostly in red wines. Head toward the white wines for less allergy side effects!


DO WE ADD SULFITES IN CLEAN CRAFTED WINES?

No wines are sulfite free unless they have been chemically processed out which would be a no go for Scout & Cellar. Sulfites are naturally occurring in wine/grapes. They are also in French fries….its in a lot more things than you think. Ours are low because the vineyards do not add sulfites during the wine harvesting/making process.

The FDA allows up to 350 ppms of sulfites, up to 16 grams added sugars and any of the 250 FDA approved chemicals. Our wines have zero added sugars, zero of the 250 chemicals and guaranteed under 100ppm sulfites. Sulfites are naturally occurring in food, dried fruit for instance has tons of sulfites. Sulfites are nautical preservatives and antioxidants. Our clean-Crafted wine makers can and sometimes will tap in a little sulfite when bottling. This stops the fermenting of wine to wine to vinegar and also to preserve.

Mass produced wines tap in so much because when they distribute all over to all the stores they do not know how long their wines will sit on a truck, in a dock, in a storage room many times without air conditioning. So this is a safeguard to protect their wines and investment.


DO SULFITES CAUSE HEADACHES?

Sulfites and headaches is a misconception. Sulfites causes a histamine reaction, inflammatory response, stuffiness or flush feeling. What many wine drinkers, experts, and research has discovered headaches from wine are most likely the culprit of all other junk mass processed wines have in them. Extras sugars and chemicals. Sarah once said if you can eat a handful of organic grapes and not get a headache…than you will be fine with our wines.


WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF A ORGANIC CLEAN CRAFTED WINE WITHOUT PRESERVATIVES?

Scout & Cellar’s wines are meant for consumption not storage so don’t put in your cellar with the intention of opening it in a few years. Scout and Cellar wines last just as long as other wines once opened. Make sure to use the vacuum sealer after you open it to keep it fresh for a few days.


IS SEDIMENT IN YOUR WINE NORMAL/GOOD?

Yes! When wine isn’t fined or filtered, or when it is aged, grape bits and lees may remain in the liquid. This is a good thing because it shows minimal intervention or processing, which is the essence of the clean-crafted wine we know and love!
